Baytree is a term that refers to a type of ornamental tree, primarily cultivated for its foliage, flowers, and potential uses in landscaping. The name “baytree” often brings to mind several distinct species within the laurel family (Lauraceae), particularly those Baytree native to North America or parts of Asia.

From a botanical perspective, baytrees belong to various genera across the Lauraceae family. Key examples include:
- Morella: Morellas are considered one of the closest relatives of true laurels in terms of morphology but possess unique characteristics like cones rather than flowers.

- Hedge Material: The dense foliage of certain baytree varieties makes them an excellent option for hedging or screens due to their capacity for self-maintenance.
- Ornamental Plantings: Specific species showcase attractive flowers that bloom at various times throughout the growing season, adding color without the maintenance required from shrub roses, hydrangeas etc. Many also boast edible leaves with distinct flavor profiles suitable as fresh herbs in salads or cooking.
However, the demand for baytrees has been met by non-native introductions, leading concerns regarding local ecosystem disruption:
- Invasive Specie Status: Non-indigenous species like Morella have become invasive within certain regions causing negative ecological effects on native habitats.
